Hunger Intervention Program Newsletter for Fall 2009
Seattle's Mayor Honors Marvin Walker. Longtime Hunger Intervention volunteer, Marvin Walker received the 2009 Mayor's End Hunger Award for Community Volunteer on October 19th, 2009. Marvin has been Linda Berger's partner to serve bagged lunches to the homeless and the hungry for nearly 10 years. Marvin named "Hunger Intervention Program" when it was chartered in 2005 and has served a HIP breakfast nearly every morning at the DESC shelter downtown since that HIP program started in 2007. A large audience gave Marvin a standing ovation in recognition of his efforts to ease hunger in the most vulnerable of Seattle's homeless citizens. Congratulations to Marvin for this well-deserved honor.
HIP's Newest Services. HIP is now making delicious wraps for ROOTS ("Rising Out of the Shadows"), a program in the University District. ROOTS provides safe housing overnight for homeless youth along with an evening meal. Unfortunately, they sometimes have to turn away those seeking shelter for lack of room. Now, at least, these youth receive a big, warm, HIP burrito to nourish them as they look for a place to sleep. If you are interested in helping homeless youth in this way, burritos are made each Wednesday from 4-6PM at the LCPC kitchen.
Heroes for the Homeless is another program that receives 300-400 sandwiches or wraps from HIP for its monthly night-time outreach services to homeless families and adults in cars and encampments around Seattle. Heroes' Executive Director, Tricia Lapitan, serves on HIP's Board of Directors, helping to develop its Lake City-based services.
HIP is also providing 120 wraps or sandwiches each week to North Helpline's Emergency Service Clinic clients 3 times a week. People arriving for these services are often very stressed, as well as hungry. Healthy HIP food is gratefully received. Once a month, HIP also provides a hand-held meal to clients of North Helpline's Saturday Food Bank. Many families enjoy a welcome meal thanks to HIP volunteer Toni Munizza, who coordinates scheduling and volunteers for this service.
HIP Leaves the DESC. After two years of serving breakfast at the DESC shelter downtown, HIP is working with the shelter to transfer the meal service to their volunteers and staff. In October, a number of regular HIP volunteers registered with the DESC to continue serving breakfast. HIP will continue to provide the shelter with simple-to-serve breakfast food items until the first of the year.
HIP Grocery Bags. HIP volunteers staged a bagging party to prepare 150 grocery bags full of shelf stable goodies for new residents at McDermott Place. Each resident of this new transitional housing unit in Lake City receives two reusable bags (kindly donated by Fred Meyer) with 15 pounds of ready to eat items (soup, stew, cereal, milk) and kitchen staples (ketchup, salt, pepper, spices). Soon, HIP will begin other services at McDermott Place.
Saturday Volunteer Opportunities. Volunteers are welcome to pass out HIP food at the Saturday Food Bank in Lake City (monthly) and at McDermott Place (weekly). Send in applications from the Volunteering page of the website.
